Skunk #1 is a Sativa dominant hybrid that was developed during the 70s by Dave Watson (Sam the Skunkman) and a collective of Californian growers known as Sacred Seeds. This multiple award-winning classic is a 3 way mix of Afghani, Colombian Gold and Acapulco Gold. She was originally developed for outdoor and greenhouse cultivation and later selected towards sweetness and resin production. This revolutionary variety is one of the first ever true stabilized hybrids in cannabis breeding history and was first released on market back in 79 by Sacred Seeds.

Dave Watson fled the US for Holland in the early 80s where founded the seed company “Cultivators Choice” and introduced Skunk #1 genetics to the Dutch. In 1988, original Skunk #1 seed stock was sold on to competing seed companies, 2 of note are Super Sativa Seed Club (SSSC) and The Seed Bank of Holland (Nevil Schoenmakers).

TASTE & SMELL –

It has been stated that the original Skunk #1 line was more woody, earthy and skunky, while the version that exists today is more citrus sweet and floral. Her flavor profile is a mix of hash and earth with some underlying sweetness and lacking in pungent tones.

EFFECTS –

She produces a well-balanced high that successfully blends uplifting head effects with strong physical relaxation. Her onset is cerebrally energizing without being racy or compromising mental clarity.

MEDICAL USES –

Medically, Skunk #1 is known for her pain-reducing qualities and is also commonly used to help combat depression and relieve stress.

GROW INFO –

Skunk #1 is considered a relatively easy strain to cultivate and displays a natural resistance to common pests and plant disease. She grows medium-height in a typical Indica fashion. Skunk #1 produces stout plants that have strong stems and branching with lime green leaves. A high calyx to leaf ratio and short internodal spacing are also traits of this strain. Her Indica shaped buds are dense, resinous and covered in long amber colored pistils. She has an indoor flowering period of seven to eleven weeks and is ready for harvest by mid-October when grown outdoors in the Northern Hemisphere. Skunk #1’s uniform structure makes her a great candidate for the utilization of additional cultivation methods and is suitable for Sea of Green, Screen of Green, lollipopping and super cropping.

SEED AVAILABILITY –

Luckily for those wishing to obtain Skunk #1 genetics, this old school classic has been preserved throughout the years by veteran breeders and growers alike. One breeder of note is Mel Frank, who recently released commercial seed stock produced from the original Skunk #1 seeds that he personally purchased directly from Dave Watson back in 1988. These seeds are currently available for purchase via Authentic Genetics Seed Co which is a joint collaboration between veteran cannabis breeders, Mel Frank and Todd McCormick.
